Climate Change, Conscious Choice & Sophrology: An Unexpected Connection

If you know me, you'll know this to be true: I spend part of my days helping people and businesses make better, more conscious choices for the planet… and the other part helping people feel a little more like themselves again.

At first glance, these two things can seem worlds apart. One is about carbon, data, energy and the planet. The other is about breath, awareness, the body and the mind.

So, people often ask me: why both?

My answer is simple — because they're deeply connected.

Helping people helps the planet. And helping the planet starts with people.

This piece was originally written for the International Sophrology Federation.

The climate challenge isn't just technical — it's human.

We can bandage climate change as much as we like. Renewable energy, smart technology, monitoring systems, policies, targets — all of it matters, and all of it helps point us in the right direction. But if we're being honest, the real solution to climate change doesn't sit solely in technology.

It sits in the conscious choices we make as humans every single day.

Choices about how we consume, how we move, how we work, how we rest, how we treat ourselves — and how we treat the world around us.

Those choices don't come from spreadsheets or dashboards. They come from within.

And here's the uncomfortable truth (said with compassion, not criticism): many of us aren't very connected to that place within.

Not because we don't care. Not because we're doing it wrong. But because life is… a lot.

How, as a society, are we supposed to make good choices for the planet when it's often hard enough to make good choices for ourselves day to day?

Life on autopilot (aka: the human to-do list).

Most of us are living on autopilot, genuinely doing our best.

In fact, we make thousands of decisions every day — what to eat, how to respond, where to go, what to prioritise, what to ignore (some studies suggest we make tens of thousands of micro-choices daily — no wonder we're tired!).

We're like walking, talking post-it notes.

When we live like this — moving from task to task without pause — overwhelm can creep in. Anxiety, fatigue, irritability, disconnection.

And the body? It's very good at letting us know when it needs a moment to slow down.

What's interesting is how often we resist that slowing down. Pausing can feel uncomfortable. Awkward. Even unproductive.

As if rest needs permission.

So… what can we actually do?

How do we make better choices? How do we reconnect with choices that truly align with how we feel? How do we reduce overwhelm and feel more calm, resilient and — dare I say it — joyful?

We start small.

We start with a pause.

The power of pausing.

Pausing doesn't need to be dramatic or time-consuming.

It can be the moment you make a cup of tea.

A toilet break.

When the traffic light turns red.

Use these moments to pause.

Pause… and bring your attention to your breath.

That's it.

It might sound almost too simple — but this small habit can create a surprisingly big shift.

And no, it's not woo-woo. It's science.

When we pause and focus on the breath, we gently move the nervous system out of fight-or-flight and into a calmer, more regulated state. Think of it like closing some of the tabs open in your mental browser.

Suddenly, things feel a little clearer. Quieter. Less urgent.

Not because life changed — but because how we're meeting life did.

From reacting to reflecting.

Here's where it gets really interesting.

Those thousands of choices we make each day? Pausing creates space between the stimulus and response.

Instead of reacting automatically, we get a moment to reflect.

It's the difference between grabbing whatever's closest because you're exhausted.

Or choosing what actually feels right because you're present.

Like steering a car — you don't slam the wheel at every bend. You slow down, adjust, and choose your direction consciously.

That's what pausing gives us: better steering.

And better steering leads to better choices — for ourselves and for the planet.

Where Sophrology comes in.

Once pausing becomes part of daily life, that's where Sophrology begins to really shine.

Sophrology is the study of human consciousness in harmony.

(I know — big words. Stay with me.)

In simple terms, it helps people improve their relationship with themselves and their environment. You could say it helps you feel a lot more… you.

It combines breath, gentle movement, visualisation and awareness — stripping out dogma and keeping what actually works.

Pausing + Sophrology = clarity, resilience, calm, confidence and alignment.

When we're more connected to ourselves, we become more connected to the world around us and in turn, we naturally make choices that nurture that world.

Sophrology, conscious choice & the planet.

So how does Sophrology help climate change?

Think of it like this:

If the mind is noisy, overwhelmed and disconnected, we default to convenience.

When the mind is calm, present and aligned, we default to care.

Care for our bodies. Care for others. Care for the planet we share.

Sophrology doesn't tell you what choices to make — it helps you create the inner conditions to make better ones.

And enough people making slightly better choices, consistently? That's where real change happens.

Why I do what I do.

The choices we make every day determine our future — for ourselves and for the planet.

That's why I do what I do.

I want to help people reconnect with themselves, so that caring for the planet becomes a natural extension of that connection — not another thing on the to-do list.

Sophrology makes this accessible. Practical. Human. It's not about perfection, just simple tools that work.

If this resonates — even a little — start with a pause.

Because big change doesn't start with doing more. It starts with becoming more aware.

The future isn't shaped by the loudest decisions but by the most conscious ones.

And those choices? They begin with you.

If any of this resonated — if you're feeling the pull to slow down, reconnect, or make choices that feel more aligned — you don't have to do it alone.
